How to deal with college burnout

College burnout isn’t simply feeling exhausted on one given day, not wanting to go to a party organized by your friends or being stressed about your final exams. It’s something much more serious: it’s complete physical, mental and emotional tiredness that leads to apathy, loss of interest in future education and career, as well as many health problems. College burnout is a very serious issue that can’t be overlooked and must be dealt with. Fortunately, there are some things you can do.

1) Try to find time to do something apart from your college studies.

Read a book, draw, dance, sing just for fun! Doing something that you want to do, not something that you have to do, will help you stay motivated and have the energy to carry on with your routine activities.

2) Make sure to get a decent amount of sleep.

It might seem that sacrificing sleep for the sake of studying all night would improve your exam results, but in reality, one extra hour of sleep could be more beneficial than one extra hour of studying.

3) Don’t say “yes” to all the opportunities you come across along the way.

College lessons are overwhelming enough, yet there probably are all kinds of extracurricular activities that your professors recommend, there are an internship, a part-time job and a friend asking for help with his research paper… You can’t be in a million places and do a million things at the same time. Quality is more important than quantity.

college burnout4) Eat a healthy diet and, if possible, do some exercise.

Having a diet of fast food might save you some time in the short run but in the long run, you’ll regret not eating healthily. Healthy food will give you more energy than snacks, and you will feel better after eating it.

5) Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help!

You don’t have to go through these difficulties on your own. Ask your friends and family for advice, reach out for professional help if you feel that you need it. Other people will support you and together you’ll successfully overcome college burnout.
